Veteran German rock star Herbert Grönemeyer and Austrian singer DJ Ötzi each grabbed a brace of trophies tonight at the 17th annual German record industry’s Echo Awards, held at Berlin’s International Congress Center.
Grönemeyer won for artist national rock/pop, and his record “12” (Groeneland/EMI) took out the album of the year national/international category.
DJ Ötzi got Echos for German language schlager and hit of the year national/international with the song ” Ein Stern (Der Deinen Namen trägt)” (Polydorf/Universal).
Meanwhile, James Blunt took out the artist international rock/pop honor, Die Fantastischen Vier won the group national rock/pop gong, and Linkin Park grabbed the group international rock/pop trophy.
The best national and international newcomer plaudits went to Mark Medlock and Mika, respectively.
The Echo gala has been held each year since 1992. The show, organized by the German Phonographic Academy, is broadcast on a two-hour delay by television channel RTL.
