Grimes brought her War Nymph Radio show to Apple Music on Wednesday (Mar. 11), and brought on Euphoria‘s Alexa Demie as a special guest to discuss the “radical, interesting music” in today’s world, among other topics.
Something that may surprise you about the 31-year-old songstress is that she is in Nas‘s “top 2 percent” of listeners. When clarifying that she is indeed talking about Nas, and not Lil Nas X, the conversation naturally turned to mega hit “Old Town Road,” which dominated the Hot 100 for a record-breaking 19 weeks in 2019.
“I feel like the situation with Old Town Road may be, like, the most significant musical situation of the last decade,” she proclaimed. Like rejected from the country charts, came up through TikTok. Like, it really is this weird hyper modern situation that’s the song, popped off cause of technology. Cause even, I think, he bought the beat from a guy and the whole thing is just this post social media occurrence that just could never have happened before the moment it happened.”
She also talked about her own music, specifically “Delete Forever” off her recent album, Miss Anthropocene. “I was just real shook, ’cause like, do you remember Lil’ Peep died, you know, from like an… opioid-related death and I’ve had a lot of really good friends, actually, one of my best friends from high school died from an opioid-related thing when we were, like, 18 or something, and so I was just super, super triggered.
“I’ve always been not writing a song about that because it felt exploited it, ’cause you know, it’s like, you see artists come out and they’re like, ‘I have four types of depression’ and all this stuff,” she continued. “But Lil Peep dying just kinda pushed me over the edge. I was like, ‘Man, this is a serious, like a super mainstream thing at this point’… That people just f—ing die from.”
