It turns out that Cardi B made her mark on not one, but two of the biggest movies of the year — and this time, she was a muse for its director.
Greta Gerwig’s Little Women hits theaters this Christmas, and the director — who was secretly pregnant with her first child throughout filming — found inspiration in Cardi B‘s own motherhood journey, as well as her Instagram. (Gerwig gave birth to Harold, her son with partner and fellow filmmaker Noah Baumbach, in March 2019.)
“I was pregnant and no one knew, and I would go home at night and watch Cardi B’s Instagram videos about her pregnancy — and they were incredible,” she told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show on Friday (Dec. 20). “I was like, she’s AMAZING! She’s making music videos and complaining about things! She’s wonderful!”
Both Gerwig and Cardi B appeared as cover girls of the latest issue of Vogue with their offspring, and Gerwig took a page from Cardi then when she decided to bring her baby to the shoot, just as Cardi had done with little Culture.
She added that Cardi’s own interview with Fallon was one of the clips she’d turn to for a creative pick-me-up, which delighted the late night host. “I inspired a little bit of Little Women?!” he asked. “Yes. And my child.”
