Green Day, Santana, Kanye West and Maroon5 are the latest additions to the “NFL Opening Kickoff 2005” lineup. The primetime entertainment special will draw performers from rock, R&B/hip-hop and country music to usher in the National Football League’s season and ramp up to Super Bowl XL.
As previously reported, hour-long Sept. 8 ABC broadcast will feature highlights of the Rolling Stones’ Aug. 31 Detroit performance from the band’s soon to be launched world tour.
A free concert outside of the Los Angeles Coliseum, site of the first Super Bowl, with West and Maroon5 will also be part of the special, which will be anchored at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., home to last year’s Bowl winning New England Patriots. Green Day and Santana will perform there, with Trisha Yearwood on hand to sing the National Anthem.
The show will be hosted by actor Freddie Prinze Jr., star of the new ABC sitcom “Freddie.” Immediately following the special, the Patriots will face the Oakland Raiders in the first game of the 2005-2006 season.
The “NFL Opening Kickoff” has become an annual affair, with Destiny’s Child, Mary J. Blige, Elton John, Toby Keith and Lenny Kravitz participating in last year’s events and Aretha Franklin Britney Spears and Mary J. Blige performing in 2003. The shindig was inaugurated in 2002 with an event in New York’s Times Square that featured Bon Jovi, Enrique Iglesias, Alicia Keys and Eve.
As reported yesterday, ABC has enlisted country star Tim McGraw to provide the music for its weekly halftime highlights segment, which will utilize a new recording of his 1995 hit “I Like It, I Love It”
