With eight nods, Green Day tops the list of nominees for the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards — six for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and two for “American Idiot.” Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott earned six each, while U2 scored five and My Chemical Romance snared four. The Aug. 28 ceremony will be broadcast live by the music channel from Miami’s American Airlines Arena.
The event will be hosted by Diddy, aka P. Diddy, who has apparently changed his name yet again. Confirmed performers include Kanye West (debuting a track from his sophomore Def Jam album, “Late Registration”), Kelly Clarkson and Green Day.
Awards will be given out in 20 categories. “Boulevard” will vie for video of the year against Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound,” West’s “Jesus Walks,” Snoop Dogg’s “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl.”
Both “Boulevard” and “American Idiot” were directed by Samuel Bayer, with whom Green Day had not previously worked. “When you get a treatment from Sam, it’s not like you get a piece of paper with this little story on it — you get this big, metal book with photographs in it and what he’s thinking about,” Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong tells Billboard.com. “He wants to go for it all the time, and we really related to that. He wants to do something great, and that’s kind of what we wanted to do, too.”
In the fan-voted MTV2 award, Akon’s “Locked Up” will battle Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Going Down,” the Bravery’s “An Honest Mistake,” My Chemical Romance’s “Helena,” Mike Jones’ “Still Tippin” and Daddy Yankee’s “Gasolina.”
For the first time, the VMAs will feature an original music score, composed by Lil Jon and produced by Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda. Viewers will be able to download the music as ringtones.
As was the case last year, performers will arrive via luxury yachts onto the waterfront arena and pre-show performances will be staged from remote locales throughout Miami.
