After uplifting fans with their inspiring summer single “Just Right,” GOT7 is singing a different tune for their latest.
“If You Do” is the lead single off the boy band’s new Mad EP and sees the normally cheery septet embracing a melancholy sound and angst-driven look.
The song keeps things relatively simple with a dark-disco sound grooving behind the guys’ wearied croons, pensive raps and heartfelt belts. Punchy beats pop in to break up the production’s routine, but there’s a relentless groove that feels as if its trudging on, coinciding with the lyrics detailing a relationship where the guys are too anxious to talk issues with a significant other in fear they’ll call the whole thing off.
“If You Do” utilizes a spoken bridge, done in English — a rare inclusion for a K-pop single. What sounds like a British woman slurs, “It’s up to you if you want to break up / I don’t care / Just do whatever you want / It doesn’t matter to me, I’ll just go to sleep,” which nails the melancholy tone and overall theme of the track.
The music video also shows a new side of GOT7 as they play angsty, heartbroken bad boys who take out their frustrations by vandalizing a building, ripping up paintings and taking a bat to a car — perhaps embodying the “Mad” feeling that their new EP is named after. Those scenes are juxtaposed with some of GOT7’s most impressive choreography to date as the boys showcase some understated, shuffle moves that pairs nicely with the low-key tune.
