K-pop group GOT7 returned on Monday (May 20) with their new single “Eclipse.”
The lead song from their newly-released EP Spinning Top : Between Security & Insecurity, also out on Monday, “Eclipse” was written by GOT7’s JB, under his producing moniker DEFSOUL, in collaboration with a variety of other songwriters. It is a melodic future bass dance track that puts the septet’s charismatic vocals and smooth raps to the forefront over pulsating beats and squelching synths.
Lyrically, the act spends the song expressing how they are overcome by a lack of self-confidence and fears, as if covered in the shadows of an emotional “Eclipse” weighing them down, but are determined to make things work and “never let you go.”
The music video for “Eclipse” switches off between scenes of each member singing on his own in a variety of sets, many of which are full of optical illusions and filmed to depict atypical spatial orientation, before GOT7 all come together to perform in a dark, shifting space, giving the whole thing a bit of a sci-feel. Each member’s expressive delivery of the song takes center stage, while their joint choreography, particularly one synchronized move during the first chorus where the members create a motion emulating a time lapse.
“Eclipse” is GOT7’s first single of 2019, and precedes their upcoming Keep Spinning world tour. A tie-in with the album, which is GOT7’s ninth EP since they got their start in 2014, Spinning Top : Between Security & Insecurity features six tracks, all of which are co-written by members of the act, with Yugyeom, Jinyoung, Youngjae (as Ars), and BamBam also credited on tracks.
