Animated dance-rock foursome Gorillaz are set to release their first full-length Virgin DVD, “Phase One: Celebrity Take Down,” Nov. 11 in the U.K. and Nov. 19 in North America. The DVD will feature animated promotional clips for five songs from Gorillaz’ self-titled Virgin debut alongside a mini documentary, a gallery, interviews, and interactive extras.
The videos for “Tomorrow Comes Today,” “Clint Eastwood,” “19/2000,” “Rock the House,” and “5/4” are featured — in 5.1 stereo surround sound — alongside storyboards from the creation of the videos, which were all directed by Gorillaz art-director and co-creator Jamie Hewlett.
Also included is the “Charts of Darkness” documentary, a clip of the Gorillaz at the 2002 Brit awards (at which they didn’t take home any trophies despite having led the field with six nominations), and interactive tours of the group’s official Web site and its animated Winnebago “tour bus.”
The DVD will also come in a limited-release special edition featuring a 48-page booklet and sticker sheet which contains new art and stories about the Gorillaz’ four “band members,” Noodle, 2-D, Russel, and Murdoc. An enhanced CD-ROM included with both versions of the title features games, screen savers, wallpaper, magazine articles, and more.
“Gorillaz” topped out at No. 14 on The Billboard 200 in September of 2001, and has sold 1.44 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. A rarities collection, “G-Sides,” debuted at No. 84 on The Billboard 200 in March 2002, while “Laika Come Home” (Parlophone/Virgin), a Gorillaz remix album by the Space Monkeyz, debuted at No. 6 on Billboard’s Top Electronic Albums chart in August.
