Gorillaz is one of the coolest bands to ever exist, and Russel is one of the coolest drummers to ever be drawn. The cartoon beat keeper has been through a lot — demonic possessions, Del the Funky Homosapien possessions, giantism — but we don’t often get to hear him speak his mind. We certainly wish he would speak more often — especially after reading this hysterical interview he gave to Puss Puss magazine.
The cat-happy publication asked him a load of fun things, like who his favorite rappers are (Biggie, MF Doom, Early Sweatshirt) or who he might like to be possessed by next (the ghost of ODB). He gave some really cool insight into the inner-workings of his fellow members and said 2D was kind of like a pet, but when it came to spilling deets on the upcoming new album, he wasn’t giving any hints.
“You can expect whatever you like. What is coming will come, whether you expect it or not,” he says to Puss Puss. “What’s important isn’t what’s happening next, but what’s happening right now. That’s all you can control. And listen, me and Gorillaz — that’s two separate things. Our paths entwine, then separate — like a messed-up pretzel.”
Whether he wants to admit it or not, the new Gorillaz album is scheduled for release in early 2017. The whole interview is pretty fun to read, so check it out.
