Matt Lauer, ‘It’ and Meghan Markle Top Google’s 2017 Year in Search

Allegations that former Today Show host Matt Lauer sexually harassed female colleagues may have left NBC reeling this year, but the scandal — and Lauer’s subsequent ouster — was good for Google. According to the search giant’s annual “Year in Search Data,” released on Tuesday, Lauer was the most-searched person and the second-most-searched word of the year.

Lauer lost the title of No. 1 search query to Hurricane Irma, which caused $200 billion in damage after it devastated Texas in August. Meghan Markle and disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein were the second and third most-searched figures behind Lauer. Tom Petty, Aaron Hernandez, Chris Cornell and Bill Paxton drove Google traffic most upon their deaths.

The deadly shooting in Las Vegas at the Route 91 Harvest Festival was the fifth most-searched item of the year, while Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and Lil Peep were at No. 6 and 8, respectively, on the Losses list. Not surprisingly, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” topped the list of most-searched songs, followed by Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble, Migos’ “Bad and Boujee,” Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do” and Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” rounding out the top 5. Linkin Park, Cardi B, Lil Pump, Joyner Lucas and Jason Aldean topped the most-searched musicians and band list and Swift’s Reputation was No. 1 on the top album/new releases list, followed by JAY-Z’s 4:44, Lamar’s DAMN., Logic’s Everybody and Drake’s More Life. 

Google’s annual list ranks the queries that prompted the biggest traffic spikes on the search engine that year, even as it leaves out sexually explicit subjects. In 2016, Powerball and Prince, who died in 2016, topped the annual list of searches, while Hillary Clinton was the No. 1 most-searched person.

Top movies that American Internet users were interested in this year, according to Google, included It, Beauty and the Beast, Wonder Woman and Get Out. Parsing by genre, Wonder Woman earned the most searches for an action movie, Hidden Figures for drama, Lady Bird for comedy and Get Out for horror.

Top television shows on the ranking include 13 Reasons Why, Game of Thrones, This Is Us, and Iron Fist. Series premieres of Game of Thrones, Scandal and Big Little Lies prompted the most online inquiries, while The Bachelor, This Is Us and Game of Thrones did the same for finales.

Meanwhile, American Google users searched Suits actress and Prince Harry fiancée Meghan Markle the most out of any actor, followed by Kevin Spacey, who was accused multiple times of sexual assault and harassment in October and November, and Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot.
