Things are changing over in the GTA camp. For starters, the electronic production and DJ duo are now called Good Times Ahead. They had a little legal trouble with the acronym, for what may be obvious reasons (you might be familiar with a little video game franchise called Grand Theft Auto), but a name change can’t stop their massive flow. It’s only up from here, and the big rocket launch comes with a new label and a hot new moombah-tinged track.
Raised in Miami and living in Los Angeles, Good Times Ahead’s Julio Mejia and Matt Toth have always had a strong connection to their latin roots. The duo released a super bangin’ EP of Latin-tinged club tunes called La Nueva Clasica last year, and they keep that vibe going strong with “Malvada.” The evil jam features co-production from Mexican producer Noizekid and Spanish verses from Columbia’s Juan Por Dios. It serves as the intro for the label, which takes the Led Zeppelin-inspired name of Good Times Bad Times.
“We wanted to create Good Times Bad Times because we feel like we have a good understanding of what the dance world needs from cool Latin producers and artists,” the duo is quoted in a press release. “A lot of our peers end up playing the stuff we find, and we want to give those artists a place to release music, as well as a main outlet to release our own music.”
While “Malvada” leans heavy into Latin style, Good Times / Bad Times will keep the group’s “death to genres” mantra close to heart. The duo announced the label with a series of tweets and a visual teaser compiling tons of tunes to come, each of which span many styles of electronic madness.
“These next sounds, shows and events will continue to build on what we stand for the most,” the duo tweets, “which is to create a space where all can feel welcome, accepted and free to express their version of Good Times with that big, positive energy that you’ve come to expect from us. There’s a lot we’ve been working on and that we can finally share with you all. Adelanté.”
