Things took a turn for the spiritual on last night’s (Oct. 5) episode of “Glee” when Finn (played by Cory Monteith) discovered an imprint of Jesus’ face on his grilled cheese sandwich.
Finn’s new found religion and Kurt Hummel’s (Chris Colfer) dad being put in the ICU after suffering a heart attacked encouraged Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison) to assign the “Glee” kids a spiritual musical assignment.
Lea Michelle returned in top form in the “Cheesus” episode when her character, Rachel Berry, took on Barbra Streisand’s “Papa, Can You Hear Me?” from the movie “Yentl.” The dramatic ballad fit Michelle’s voice much better than last week’s rendition of “Hit Me Baby One More Time.” It proved to be one of the most poignant moments of the show the song ended with Rachel and fellow glee-clubbers praying over Mr. Hummel, despite Kurt’s lack of faith.

However, it was undeniably Colfer’s episode, when Kurt performed a stunning rendition of The Beatles’ “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” After a heart-wrenching monologue about his father holding his hand at his mother’s funeral, the glee club’s least faithful member moved into the Fab Four’s classic hit. The performance featured a teary Kurt singing in the choir room, spliced with images of his childhood — learning to ride his bike and tea parties with his father, played by Mike O’Malley. Colfer’s soprano voice added the perfect dagger-in-the-heart quality to the song. We sniffled too, Kurt, we sniffled too.

Finn also suffered a crisis of faith after realizing that his “Cheesus” sandwich really wasn’t a direct connection to God. Cue Monteith’s take on the R.E.M. classic “Losing My Religion.” The song tied in well with a prominent theme in the episode — the struggle to find or hold onto faith in the face of adversity. Monteith’s smoky vocals didn’t quite match Michael Stipe’s, but he was able to provide the song with the angsty edge the performance needed to convey the point.

Next week the glee club will partner up and face off in the “Duets” episode, which features “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” originally performed by Elton John and Kiki Dee, and Jason Mraz’s and Colbie Caillat’s “Lucky.”
