Online retailer Amazon.co.uk has reported a surge in sales for acts featured at the U.K.’s Glastonbury festival, which had extensive media coverage over the weekend. The event was broadcast on multiple BBC TV and radio channels as well as online.
Australian drum ‘n’ bass outfit Pendulum enjoyed the biggest sales rise, with sales via Amazon.co.uk music and digital (MP3) stores soaring 909% over the course of the weekend, ahead of headliners Bruce Springsteen (329%), Blur (187%) and Neil Young (151%).
Heritage acts also benefited, with Status Quo getting the second biggest increase with a 788% sales spike. Crosby, Stills and Nash (448%), Tom Jones (200%) and Madness (170%) also sparked renewed interest following festival performances.
Franz Ferdinand’s performance helped to secure them a 470% sales increase – the third best of the weekend behind Pendulum and Status Quo.
Newcomers Passion Pit (341% increase), VV Brown (326%) and White Lies (181%) also achieved respectable sales increases.
“Glastonbury isn’t just a festival, it’s an annual media event,” said Julian Monaghan, head of music buying at Amazon.co.uk, in a statement. “With vast amounts of TV, radio and press coverage, a big performance can generate huge rises in sales for the artists concerned – and this year is no different.”
