To celebrate the release of their highly touted new album “Father, Son, Holy Ghost” (out today via True Panther/Matador), San Francisco indie rockers Girls will stage an in-store performance Friday at Grimey’s Records in Nashville that is being billed as “America’s very first nationwide in-store.”
While that statement is slightly overinflated (many in-stores have been webcast), it is almost certainly the first one to be, as the press release states, “webcast live one-time only across the internet properties of America’s most important and influential independent record stores.”
“It was all brought to us as a complete package,” Grimey’s assistant manager Josh Walker told Billboard.biz about the plan. “We didn’t even hesitate. It was a done deal.”
Aptly titled “Girls Across America,” fans simply have to visit the website or Facebook page of a local participating record store at 5 pm CST on Friday, where they’ll be able to check out the broadcast.
And as if that weren’t enough, Walker says the performance will be recorded professionally and released on Black Friday as a limited-edition 7″ vinyl release, available at the participating independent retailers.
According to the press release, more than 75 record stores are participating — including Other Music (New York), Amoeba (various California locations), Newbury Comics (Boston), Waterloo (Austin), Criminal (Atlanta) and many more — with more expected and welcome to join.
“We do live music in the record store all the time,” says Walker. “Matador, True Panther, and Girls have come up with an amazing way for people to attend a special event that they normally wouldn’t be able to since they don’t live in Nashville.”
“I hope that everybody gets on board and participates because I think it’s such a great idea,” he added. “And with a band like Girls that’s just getting bigger and bigger, it’s a really great opportunity for people to jump in and be a part of something special.”
