When nine women appeared onstage in Seoul on Aug. 5, 2007, they set things in motion to become one of South Korea’s most popular acts to date. Nine years later, Girls’ Generation celebrated the anniversary of their debut with the fan-dedicated track “Sailing.”
“Sailing” was released Friday (Aug. 5) and is dedicated to their loyal fanclub, SONE. Written by member Sooyoung, the sweet pop ballad recounts Girls’ Generation’s journey with their fans from rookie act to Korea’s reigning pop princesses. While called “That Summer (0805)” in Korean to highlight the beginning of their time together, the English title refers to the pink ocean that appears at Girls’ Generation’s concerts when their fans wave K-pop’s iconic lightsticks.
Since the breakout success of “Gee” in 2009, Girls’ Generation has broken record after record, including two No. 1 albums on the World Album Chart. With 14 albums and nearly 30 official singles (they have over 40 music videos including a bevy of non-official singles) in Korean, Japanese, and English, the girl group has attracted fans from all over the globe and continuously sell out concerts around Asia. (Their songs have also been used to punish North Korea for continuing to threaten its southern neighbor.)
The group has been busy with individual projects and concert tours throughout much of 2016, Tiffany and Taeyeon each released solo albums while Girls’ Generation-TTS (Tiffany, Taeyeon, and Seohyun) appeared at KCON LA last week to celebrate their anniversary with California SONEs. “Sailing” is their first single of 2016 and was accompanied by an animated music video that takes the viewer through Girls’ Generation’s music video concepts from over the years.
Beginning with a message in a bottle set to float through the sea, the video features drawings that recall many of the group’s Korean singles including their debut track “Into The New World,” (airplane) the iconic “Gee,”(hats) and last year’s, “Lion Heart” (there’s a lion on a pedestal) before featuring a silhouette of the eight remaining members. Not to diminish the impact of former member Jessica Jung, the video includes nine spotlights in the “I Got A Boy” segment before a light goes out in the following scene for “Mr.Mr,” referring to last Korean music video Jessica was featured in.
The video for “Sailing”, which was seen over 1 million times in the 24 hours following its release, was accompanied by a video message. In the second video, Girls’ Generation’s members expressed their thanks and love to the fans who have helped propel them to their legendary status. Ending with “We are Girls’ Generation. In the future we are Girls’ Generation. Forever we are Girls’ Generation. SONE’s are the best!,” the short video carried through the the meaning of “Sailing” as the group enters it’s 10th year together.
