British pop quintet Girls Aloud followed their recent No. 1 single, “The Promise” (Fascination/Polydor), with a bestselling debut yesterday (Nov. 10) for their fifth studio album, “Out of Control.” The X Factor Finalists’ charity song “Hero” (Syco Music/Sony BMG) stayed atop the singles chart.

Pink’s “Funhouse” (LaFace) fell to No. 2 after a week at the top, as Enrique Iglesias’ “Greatest Hits” (Interscope) arrived at No. 3 and Razorlight’s “Slipway Fires” (Vertigo/Universal) at No. 4. The British band’s self-titled second album had a No. 1 debut in the U.K. in the summer of 2006.
A new TV-advertised retrospective by British chart veterans Status Quo, “Pictures — 40 Years of Hits” (UMTV), debuted at No. 8. The X Factor single, a cover of the 1993 Mariah Carey hit, started a second week at No. 1 ahead of a new entry at No. 2 for Beyonce’s “If I Were a Boy” (Columbia). There were three other top ten debuts, led by Britney Spears’ “Womanizer” (Jive) at No. 4. Leona Lewis came in at No. 5 with “Forgive Me” (Syco Music/Sony BMG), which was on the North American version of her debut album “Spirit” but not the international edition, and will now be included on the re-promoted set, out in the U.K. next Monday.
Alesha Dixon, the former member of early 2000s chart group Mis-Teeq who found new fame last year as the winner of BBC1’s “Strictly Come Dancing” series, debuted at No. 8 with “The Boy Does Nothing” (Asylum/Warner Music).
AC/DC is in a second week at the European Top 100 Albums summit with “Black Ice” (Columbia), while Eurochart Hot 100 Singles welcomed a new No. 1 in Guru Josh Project’s top three U.K. hit of two weeks ago, “Infinity 2008” (Bigcitybeats).
