Time to place a call: Ghostbusters is officially being rebooted with director Paul Feig and Katie Dippold (The Heat) penning the script. “It’s official. I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call,” Feig tweeted Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 8), confirming rumors that the reboot of the classic 1984 comedy will be led by women.
‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Lands ‘The Heat’ Writer Katie Dippold (Exclusive)
While we can’t wait to hear what hilarious ladies are selected to step into Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis‘ boots (Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig are a given, right?), we also can’t wait to hear the updated iconic Ghostbusters theme song. The original tune, recorded by Ray Parker Jr., was on the Billboard Hot 100 for 21 weeks, including three week at No. 1 starting Aug. 11, 1984.
What women should give the tune a 2015 twist? Check out some of our picks below:
1. Beyonce
She’s a no-brainer. On top of all her talent, she’s already lent her voice/music to a popular film (the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey). She’s not known for her sense of humor, which seems necessary for whomever is going to repeatedly sing “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts,” but perhaps she’ll surprise us.
2. Nicki Minaj
Speaking of people who would have no problem sassily declaring “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts,” if they want a fresh spin, a Minaj guest verse breaking down fighting ghosts seems inevitable. The real question is who she’ll be paired with…
3. Lorde
…Which leads us to the very of-the-moment Lorde. She’s already dipping her toes in the film world by curating the Hunger Games soundtrack (and contributing a single), and her age and fan base would help introduce the classic track to a whole new generation.
4. Janelle Monae
The Electric Lady is captivating and enthusiastic — adjectives that are going to be needed for this reboot to take off. Plus, have you seen her charming Sesame Street appearance? That’s the kind of energy the goofy tune needs.
5. Kesha
It’s almost like all her talk about hooking up with a ghost was building to this! Just picture the video, you guys.
