All hail the dark lord Gesaffelstein, for he is risen. The arguable king of all dance floor doom and gloom just shared a teaser clip to social media. The taunt of new music follows news that he’s signed with Columbia Records.
It’s been about three years since the Frenchman released an original tune, though he did break his silence by producing two track for The Weeknd earlier this year. The clip is set to a fittingly-haunting hum, the Frenchman’s dark version of the Dolby THX logo sound. A beat played in reverse thumps hard above it, increasing in volume toward a siren screech that builds the sonic anxiety. The wave crests and falls into a state of strangeness. Whatever is coming, it’s going to be deliciously weird.
From “Pursuit” to “Hate or Glory,” his sound sits squarely at the intersection of industrial, techno, French touch and straight-up horror soundtracks. His track “Hellifornia” feeds West Coast hip-hop through a psychotic filter. Always fitted in a suit and shrouded by cigarette smoke, he’s remained beloved though unseen. His sinister style has brought him collaborations with A$AP Rocky, Lana Del Rey, Tiga and more. He’s been listed as a direct influence of REZZ and was credited as being a major inspiration for Kanye West‘s Yeezus.
