Former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has released an old recording of himself warming up singing the Carpenters‘ “Superstar.”
The song was an outtake from the Black Parade recording sessions, Way explained in a series of tweets. “This specific recording was from the day I sang ‘Cancer’ for the album,” he wrote. “This track was a warm up. as I used to warm up to The Carpenters.”

The group had tinkered with the idea of including a cover on the record, but The Black Parade already “had too many tracks.” Engineered by Doug McKean (who worked on The Black Parade and Way’s solo record Hesitant Alien), Way nails all the emotions in the medley and brings it home in the chorus, as he whispers “I really do.”
“It’s just one of the saddest songs,” he wrote.
