Remembering George Floyd, Beyoncé, Kamala Harris, Michelle Williams and more took to social media on Wednesday (Oct. 14) to honor the late Minneapolis native on what would have been his 47th birthday.
“Happy Eternal Birthday George Floyd,” Queen Bey wrote on her personal website alongside a smiling photo of a younger Floyd bent over his schoolwork, while her bestie and former Destiny’s Child bandmate tweeted, “#GeorgeFloyd never forgotten! Today is his birthday!!!” with a pair of heart and praying hands emojis.
Meanwhile, Harris pointed to Floyd’s tragic death as continued evidence for police reform across the country, writing, “Today would have been George Floyd’s 47th birthday. He should still be alive today celebrating another year with his family and friends. We need justice and to ensure that this never happens again—starting with banning chokeholds and creating a national standard for use of force.”
Others who commemorated Floyd’s birthday include Tracee Ellis Ross, Amy Schumer, Martin Luther King III and Kerry Washington — the latter of whom urged her followers to take action at the polls in his memory, writing, “#Vote because #GeorgeFloyd should be turning 47 today.”
In the wake of his tragic passing, Floyd — who was killed in May by a police officer kneeling on his neck while placing him under arrest — has served as a late figurehead for the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement, as marches and protests sprung up around the nation to call for justice in his murder along with the likes of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black lives lost at the hands of police brutality and racial violence.

Happy birthday, George Floyd. You were a father, a son, a brother, a friend, a man and most importantly a human being that deserved dignity and respect. You should still be here. pic.twitter.com/b4QRbG5z2r

George Floyd should be celebrating his 47th birthday today with his family. Instead, his family continues to mourn his loss. We must continue our fight against police brutality and systemic racism so there is never again a death like George Floyd's. #SayHisName
