There may not be a funkier man alive than George Clinton. The Parliament and Funkadelic band leader is synonymous with the genre, and has personified its colorful style and rhythms for generations, but even he fights to remain relevant in the ever-evolving music scene. He recently opened up to Rolling Stone about that struggle, and he credits his recent team-up with LA beat maker Flying Lotus and his Brainfeeder label with a lot of his recent reinvention.
“Flying Lotus I wasn’t expecting,” Clinton is quoted. “When they announced the Brainfeeder thing, I saw just how much it meant from the feedback on the Internet. That was the perfect move.”
On working with FlyLo and his funky, psychedelic bass playing artist Thundercat, he is quoted, “They remind me of the 21st-century version of when Bootsy (Collins) hooked up with Parliament-Funkadelic. They sound like the new version of that whole era. They’ve got the jazz version of that, and they’re playing it themselves. Thundercat is a real great bass player. He reminds me so much of Bootsy when he first came around us.”
He also told Rolling Stone readers that FlyLo is set to produce his next record, and said he hopes the producer takes a big hand in its direction. He sees an interesting lane in dance and electronic music for funk musicians of his era, taking cues from the work Nile Rodgers and Daft Punk laid down during the Random Access Memories sessions.
“I had my eyes on that two years ago, when I saw Nile and Daft Punk and all them doing stuff together,” he is quoted. “There’s a route – [Daft Punk] are DJs for the world; they’re not DJs for cities and states. They’re so big in the whole industry that other DJs play the records that they play.”
