On first listen, Galantis’ debut single “Smile” is a song about unconditional love and support–one partner soothing another during troubled times. “Smile / Cause you ain’t got nothing to worry about,” it earnestly coos. But the NSFW video puts a different slant on the proceedings, showing a variety of mostly naked couples in starkly lit rooms making each other…err… smile.*
That sly little switch is part of what makes Galantis — the union of uber-producers Bloodshy, aka Christian Karlsson, and Style of Eye, aka Linus Eklöw — stand out from the EDM pack. Not to mention its members’ impressive shared resume (Britney Spears, Icona Pop) and knack for big sounds and sleek vocals.
Now, Kaskade is getting in on the fun, turning in a “Smile” re-rub that’s more edit than mix. Code’s got it first.
“‘Smile’ is a fantastic track,” Kaskade told Billboard exclusively. “Rather than remixing it and changing its essence, I wanted to keep all of the things I love about the original and make an edit that would bring my favorite elements to the forefront, and make it work in my sets.”
What resulted is indeed a treadmill version of the more expansive original; taut, and explosive, with a harder strike.
Get ready for a lot more Galantis in 2014: The group will drop its debut album on Big Beat/Atlantic soon, and was just announced as part of the Coachella lineup.
