As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, no one can doubt New Yorkers throw the best parties. And Brooklyn designer Jonathan Simkhai proved that well, inviting the stylish Swedish DJ Duo Galantis to play his Jonathan Simkhai x Carbon 38 Celebration after-party on Saturday (Feb. 11).
“It was my dream to have them perform at my party,” Simkhai tells Billboard. “And somehow everything fell into place.” Galantis and Simkhai were initially connected through a mutual friend, who, after discovering that Simkhai would repeat-play “No Money” in his studio while designing, decided it was time to set them up.
The party, which was at New York’s clubby, PepsiCo-owned Kola House, was the perfect venue for the designer and DJ’s first collaboration. Located in Manhattan’s swanky Meatpacking District, the after-party read more like an intimate rave than an image-conscious soiree. And considering Simkhai’s Fall 2017 collection, which the designer says was inspired by “strong women and strong voices,” a rager makes sense. “Everything looks really dope,” Galantis’ Christian Karlsson said as he surveyed the scene.
This was the first NYFW for the group, but it certainly won’t be the last. “A lot of the people that I grew up with ended up becoming great Swedish designers,” Karlsson said, noting that Galantis is looking to expand into fashion, they’re just trying to find the right designer to collaborate with. So what would one of their first possible pieces look like? Potentially a version of their now-iconic sea fox logo bomber jacket.
