France’s prime minister has promised “total transparency” in investigating the death of a man following a violent clash between police and attendants at a popular national music festival in the western city of Nantes.
Edouard Philippe said Tuesday (July 30) that a body found Monday in the Loire river was identified as festivalgoer Steve Maia Canico.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the police intervention on June 22, when tear gas was reportedly fired into the crowd and some festivalgoers fell into the nearby river. Fourteen people had to be rescued from the water.
The case drew national attention after 89 people filed complaints against the police who they said charged the crowd.
Philippe said there was “no link” between the police operation and Maia Canico’s death.
