It’s been awhile since we last heard from Freakwater proper — six years to be exact. But critics and alt-country fans haven’t forgotten about the Chicago duo. Their traditional take on classic Americana really is unrivalved today (except for maybe Gillian Welch) and this pseudo-comeback album is quite a welcome return.
Whatever your predilection is for genre labels, Freakwater is traditional in all respects of the word and “Thinking of You” is no exception. With production by Red Red Meat/Califone principal Tim Rutili, the focus remains on Janet Bean and Catherine Irwin’s vocals. Their booze-fueled tales of irony and lost loves are masked behind a tender, sweet exterior of high harmonies, pleasant fiddles and spot-on duets.
Sad and remorseful at times and cheery and playful at others, “Thinking of You” is steeped in rural tradition.
