Former Alabama lead singer Randy Owen is set to release his solo debut single, “Braid My Hair,” to country radio. A new album, “One on One,” produced by Big & Rich’s John Rich, will be released this spring on newly-formed DMP Records. Distribution had not been announced at press time.
Written by Chris Gray and Brent Wilson, the song is the first either writer has released as a single. Gray, a teacher in a children’s hospital, often witnessed the side effects of chemotherapy and witnessed children, “especially girls,” he says, wanting to be able to braid their hair again.
One hundred percent of the publishing royalties from the song will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, for which Owen is a longtime spokesman.
Owen will tour beginning next month. Alabama’s “American Farewell Tour” began in 2003 and ended in 2004.
