Dave Grohl understands just how hard teachers work: As the Foo Fighters frontman said Wednesday night (Jan. 20) on Joe Biden’s Celebrating America primetime inauguration special, his mother, Virginia, was a public school teacher for 35 years. She was “a mentor for her students, remembered long after their graduation,” Grohl said.
For the special, the band was introduced by Mackenzie Adams, a kindergarten teacher who went viral for her high-energy virtual classes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This next song is for Mackenzie and all of our unshakable teachers who continue to enlighten our nation’s students every day,” Grohl said to introduce “Times Like These,” the all-too-appropriate 2003 song from the band’s fourth album, One by One.
The Foos also performed the fitting song when they performed on Saturday Night Live in November. The song got an all-star cover in April as well — featuring Grohl, Dua Lipa, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, 5 Seconds of Summer and more — to raise money for COVID-19 relief.
