In an effort to encourage Latinos – particularly newly-naturalized citizens – to register to vote, Voto Latino has partnered with leading regional Mexican label Fonovisa/Disa to produce a series of PSA’s that will air on radio stations nationwide.
Fonovisa/Disa acts who have already taped spots in English and Spanish include Jenni Rivera, Yolanda Pérez, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, La Arrolladora Banda El Limón, EL Chapo and El Gringo, Billboard has learned.
The spots, in English and Spanish, feature each act identifying itself, then exhorting listeners to register to vote and exercise their rights as citizens. There is no music in the spots.
The spots, which will air in regional Mexican formats, will be serviced to radio stations nationwide this week. But the focus will be the Western and Midwestern states.
As part of its campaign, Voto Latino and its partner, Southwest Airlines, are sponsoring a contest for radio hosts. DJs or hosts for the station that registers the most voters will be flown to Los Angeles to appear on an online telenovela parody with Rosario Dawson and Wilmer Valderrama.
The parody follows the “La Pasión de la Decisión” online series, which talks about the importance of voting and which can be seen on Myspace, Youtube and Facebook.
Voto Latino is a non partisan, nonprofit voter engagement organization that taps celebrity voices and multi-media platforms.
