“Perfect Timing” — that’s what you call it when your mostly sold-out North American tour brings you to Coachella and you drop a song the Friday of weekend one.
FKJ, the funky French multi-instrumentalist who embodies the 21st-century electro-jazz truth, had been trying to team up with London vocalist Col3trane for at least a year. The pair finally found time to steal away to a studio and listen to some beats when the Frenchman came through Col3trane’s city on tour last October.
“We spent most of the time talking & listening to stuff,” FKJ is quoted in a press release. “It feels right getting to know each other rather than trying to make magic happen in such a small time.”
There wasn’t a lot of pressure, and Col3trane left the studio with a few of his favorite beats in hand. A week later, FKJ had a demo in his inbox, and “Perfect Timing,” a blend of dancehall rhythms, swinging saxophone and curiously-sensual synths, became the mood and the single.
“I already had a melody in my head for it, but what he came up with outdid what I had originally imagined,” FKJ says. “He added words in the right spots. It also has that dancehall vibe that I love. When I was a teenager, I listened to a lot of dancehall and this beat is definitely an inspiration from it. I originally made the beat while on tour, just me on my laptop, very quickly and with a clear mind. Once Col3 sent over his vocals, I went back to the studio and worked on it. I haven’t produced for many voices yet, but I quickly realized that this is something that I love to do. I’m free to expand into different genres that people don’t expect from me.”
“FKJ is a wizard,” Col3trane is quoted. “It was a blessing to work with him.”
“Perfect Timing” is out now on Mom + Pop Records. If you’re at Coachella, be sure to catch FKJ’s awe-inspiring, one-mand-band grooves during his live set Saturday, April 13 & 20, 3:50 p.m. at Mojave.
