Five of the 10 finalists for the inaugural Virgin Megastore Shortlist Prize for Artistic Achievement in Music will perform live at the awards ceremony, set for Nov. 19 at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. Sigur Ros, Dandy Warhols, Nikka Costa, Bilal, and Talib Kweli will all play short, four- to six-song sets, after which the Shortlist winner will be presented with a $10,000 prize.
The 10 finalists, which also include PJ Harvey, Air, Gorillaz, Ryan Adams, and Jay Dee, were chosen by a panel of 15 industry experts that included such artists as Trent Reznor, Dave Grohl, Macy Gray, and Aimee Mann. The panel will convene in the venue’s Alterknit Theater prior to the live performances for final voting. In late September, the list of finalists was pared down from a group of 49 possible album releases.
Tickets for the event are now available through the Knitting Factory’s box office and its official Web site.
Designed as a U.S. version of the U.K.’s prestigious Mercury Music Prize, the award aims to honor contemporary music’s most creative and adventurous releases. Virgin Megastore plans to make “a significant charitable contribution” in the name of the winner in honor of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.
