New Music Friday is intense. Hundreds of songs drop from artists around the world, and you’re supposed to somehow find the best ones? It’s fun work, but it’s time-consuming — so we at Billboard Dance want to give you a hand. Each week, we sift through the streams and dig into the digital crates to present absolute must-hears from the wide breadth of fresh jams.
This week saw the release of the long-awaited (like, seven years long-awaited) sophomore EP from TNGHT, the new single from Canadian producer Whipped Cream, the power trio Zayn, R3hab and Jungleboi gathering for “Flames” and –. In additon to that we have a particularly stacked list of new singles from Grimes, Griz, Joris Voorn and the one and only Deadmau5. Let’s dig in.
Grimes, “So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth”
Music’s self-proclaimed “Chief Ethereal Officer” returns from deep space with “So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth,” a bewitching unfurl of hypnotic percussion, layered synth and Grimes’ alien siren call of a voice used to perfectly angelic/eerie effect. Arguably some of her best work to date, Grimes’ six-minute epic is a gorgeous, deeply feminine and wonderfully intense slow burn that shifts gears in the final minute, doing a slow fade dissolve into pure light. “So Heavy I Fell Through the Earth” is the second single from Miss Anthropocene, the forthcoming Grimes album out February 21, 2020. — KATIE BAIN
MK and Sonny Fodera feat. Raphaella, “One Night”
At its best, dance music is an escape, a few precious hours of starry-eyed, carefree euphoria before being pushed back into the world’s bleak reality. On their new collaboration, “One Night,” MK and Sonny Fodera condense that feeling into a 161-second capsule with a rousing, vocal house record that begs its subject to throw all reservations aside and surrender themselves to the moment.
After a slow, piano-led build with the urgent pitter-patter of a quickening heartbeat, it peaks in a burst of emotional confetti. “One Night” has been a staple at both producers’ gigs, whether it’s being rinsed on a packed train in Berlin (where the pair shared a secret back-to-back set) or in an industrial lot in the middle of Los Angeles. Sometimes all it takes is a moment to make one night magical. In this case, “One Night” makes a moment all its own. — KRYSTAL RODRIGUEZ
After years on the road, a transcontinental move to Los Angeles and much time spent in a self-made hyper-saturated fantasy, Madeon’s sophomore album Good Faith is out in full. “I’ve been living this album every day for years,” the French producer says in a press release. “I wanted to capture the colors of this mysterious, sometimes dangerous joy I’ve been feeling in episodes lately. Those moments where reality feels more colorful, more profound, more spiritual, more fun than usual. I tried to illustrate that by welcoming into my world the sounds of humans, from large choirs to soloists, children and live musicians.”
The 10-track record is a complete and dynamic work that pushed the artist past his edge into new creative territory. He wrote, recorded, sang and produced Good Faith from start to finish, infusing the LP with pop, soul, funk, disco and all things that make his sonic DNA. It’s thoughtful, intimate, maximalist and energetic all at once. The whole album is worth a listen, but “Nirvana,” with its hymnal heights and lofty prog rock atmosphere, is a good place to start. — KAT BEIN
Joris Voorn feat. Lazarusman, “This City”
“Forgive yourself for the things you have not done and the things you have done. Lead yourself forward. Lunge into the abyss. Become the light,” instructs South African spoken word artist Lazarusman on “This City.” Taken from the fourth studio LP from legendary Dutch producer Joris Voorn, the track is a soaring progressive effort and a meditative affirmation you can dance to, with dancing of course being a meditation in and of itself. The track falls cleanly in line with the overall vibe of the new album \\\\, which takes influence from the ’90s rave scene and delivers an immersive collection of tracks that are dually deep and ascendant.
“The first time I ever heard of Joris Voorn was when I was still very young, he did a remix of a track by Nalin and Kane called ‘Beach Ball,'” Lazarusman tells Billboard Dance. “I must’ve played that song every day of my life. And as a boy living in Johannesburg, Joris seemed to me like this super mega-star. So today, to have someone who I look up to and admire want to collaborate with me is an honor and a blessing. He is one of my heroes, I am happy that he wants to work with me. It shows that anything is possible; you are not alone.” — K. Bain
Griz, “Gonna Get Funky”
Grab your second-in-command, hop in the space ship and go warp speed to this alien disco. Griz’s Bangerz.Zip EP is out of this world, not least because of this interstellar intro track. Yes, that vocal sample is most definitely from “Cha Cha Slide,” but we actually want to crash any weddings that drop this tune. “Gonna Get Funky” is one of three tubular tunes in the recently-released package. The other two are heavier with the bass, so if you’re in the mood for bell bottoms and soul trains, this is the go-to groove. Griz calls Pt. 4 his “favorite pack yet,” so don’t sleep. — K. Bein
Autograf feat. Jared Lee, “Ain’t Deep Enough”
The new single from Chicago-based duo Autograf is the definition of infectious, with high energy house beats and ’80s synths creating one of those songs that’s certain to make you spin around on the dance floor with your eyes closed and your hands in the air. That is to say it’s a joyful anthem with artistic heft and staying power. Featuring vocals from singer Jared Lee, the song comes from Autograf’s fothcoming LP, for which each song comes with a corresponding tarot card. The card for this particular track features a man and woman floating in space, turned away from each other and surrounded by moons, flowers, cups and other cosmic paraphrenalia. Draw your own conclusions, or just go ahead and dance. — K. Bain
Oliver Heldens with Firebeatz & Schella feat. Carla Monroe, “Lift Me Up”
For his next trick, Dutch DJ and producer Oliver Heldens drives a rowdy rhythm somewhere between radio-ready pop and warehouse rave madness. He teamed up with Firebeatz and Schella to concoct a real out-of-control banger that somehow hits both sweet and sweaty. Carla Monroe belts one for the ages with an infectious groove fit for singing along. All the while, the synths pound pavement with raw, saw-tooth edge. You can mosh to this, pogo in the crowd, or let your vogue arms shoot in all directions.
Nghtmre & Gunna, “Cash Cow”
Nghtmre continues his hot streak with “Cash Cow,” a collaboration with the also very popular Atlanta rapper Gunna. Together, the duo go dark and hypnotic, with Gunna’s low-key flow about the pleasures of what money can get you — penthouse suites, tan women, etc. — riding the producer’s stoney, layered beat.
The track follows Nghtmre collabs with A$AP Ferg, Pnb Rock & Wiz Khalifa and Pell, with the artist developing his hip-hop prowess while also riding high in the electronic scene. (His tour, The Portal, launches in December and extends through March.) Meanwhile, the music for “Cash Cow” finds Gunna delivering lyrics while Nghtmre lurks in the background and a gaggle of heavily armed robbers do whatever it takes to get that cash. — K. Bain
In the midst of his Cube v3 tour, Deadmau5 today (Nov. 15) shares a new single, “Satrn,” out via his Mau5trap label. Gorgeous and serenely ambient at the start, over the course of seven minutes “Satrn” transforms into the pulsing, expansive and euphoric progressive sound that is distinctively Deadmau5’s. It’s the Canadian producer’s (né Joel Zimmerman) first piece of original new music since February, following his Shotty Horroh collaboration “Are You Not Afraid” from the Mau5ville: Level 3 compilation. (Last month, he also dropped a remix album, Here’s the Drop!)
‘Mau5 fans can hear “Satrn” in the flesh, among fans favorites new and old, at his ongoing U.S. run of Cube v3 shows, which extends until February 2020. The latest iteration of his iconic Cube live show, which originated in 2010, Cube v3 boasts 360-degree rotation and new-and-improved visuals. Last week, Deadmau5 stopped by the Billboard Music Live Summit via video chat to discuss the new live show with Billboard Dance Director Katie Bain and members of his team, including manager Dean Wilson and live music director Chris Schroeder.
“I’ve been very open and public about the development of the show and stuff like that, and I think it’s really opened a lot of venues for interest in the technology that we’re using,” he said. “I’ve [had] a lot of really positive [interactions] talking to fans about, ‘Hey, I really love watching you develop the show. I’m a coder and that’s really cool what you’re doing and maybe you can do this differently.’ That’s the kind of interaction that I have with my fans that I don’t think other acts really get a lot of.” — K.
