After years of silence, Fiona Apple emerged from the wilderness last month with news that she’s finished her fifth album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters. She told The New Yorker that the LP’s title was directly inspired by a line from British crime drama The Fall, when Gillian Anderson’s lead detective calls for the said bolt cutters to unlock the door to a room where a young girl has been tortured. “Really, what it’s about is not being afraid to speak,” she told writer Emily Nussbaum.
But more importantly, when are we going to hear such new songs as “Rack of His,” “Heavy Balloon” and “For Her?” In a brief video posted by her friend Zelda Hallman — who notes that an unnamed someone suggested Apple should push back the release until October — the singer suggested that she thinks the follow-up to 2012’s The Idler Wheel… could be out… soon.
“Should I release it, like soon, like really soon?” Apple says in the close-up video of her face. “I think I’m gonna.” A spokesperson for Apple could not be reached for comment at press time about the release date for the album.
