Jools Holland’s new 22-track big-band disc, “Jools Holland’s Big Band Rhythm & Blues,” will see release in the North America on Jan. 8 via Rhino. The album, which contains the last song George Harrison wrote (with his son Dhani), was released in late November in the U.K. and debuted at No. 11 on the U.K. albums chart.
Holland, former Squeeze keyboardist and host of the long-running “Later With Jools Holland” music show on England’s BBC2, invited some of the music world’s favorite sons to join his full orchestra for the album’s recording. Notables who make appearances on “Big Band” include Harrison, Sting, Eric Clapton, Paul Weller, Joe Strummer, Dr. John, Stereophonics, David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Van Morrison, Steve Winwood, John Cale, Mick Hucknall, and Jamiroquai. The album was produced by Laurie Latham.
Harrison’s song, “Horse to the Water,” was the first new original piece to be released by the late former Beatle in 10 years. As previously reported, the song’s publishing is listed under “RIP Ltd. 2001,” in apparent nod to Harrison’s then-failing health.
Other songs on the set include Willie Dixon’s “Seventh Son” featuring Sting, and Winwood guesting on Dixon’s “I’m Ready.” David Gilmour and Mica Paris take on Screaming Jay Hawkins’ “I Put a Spell on You,” while Strummer shows up on “The Return of the Blues Cowboy,” and Morrison appears on “Back O’ Town Blues.”
“There’s some people on here that are extraordinarily famous and some that aren’t so well-known,” Holland told Billboard.com in November, “but to me they’re all great.”
