What one tip would you give songwriters trying to license their music? What band/artist would you like to see the cast of “Glee” perform? That’s what we asked attendees throughout the second day of The Hollywood Reporter/Billboard Film and TV Music Conference in Los Angeles on Thursday. The answers may surprise.
Peter Khosla, From the Ground Up Management
Khosla says know what the music supervisor wants. “The last one we got was for So You Think You Can Dance, we researched the songs the choreographer Stacy, the types of songs she used in the past, it was singer-songwriter songs, and we sent her in that type of song. We couldn’t get to her so we went to the agent of the choreographer to get to her. The agent though it fit well and passed it on. No we have an open door to the producer.”
Miguel de Narvaez, director general of Sonido Comercial
“Investigate the background of a company,” said Miguel de Narvaez, director general of Sonido Comercial. “Do your homework, No. 1. Don’t compromise your style for a gig.”

“Don’t quit your day job,” said Craig E. Parker of Chicago Music Library. “Have an arsenal of music. Hire a good accountant and a good lawyer.”
John Fulford, TV composer
“Metadata has to be on the song,” said TV composer John Fulford. “Use Box.net.”
Simone Burton, CPC Music Publishing
“One-stop shop. Artists think one-dimensionally — they just think about the music aspect. I advise if doing music, think on a broader scale. Think about music, TV, commercials, understand how the process works,” said Simone Burton of CPC Music Publishing. A one-stop shop “makes it easier for music supervisor.”
What band/artist would you like to see the cast of “Glee” perform?

“I don’t watch ‘Glee’ but if they did Queen or hip-hop like Grand Master Flash or Sugar Hill Gang, I’d watch. If they did Sugar Hill Gang, I’d cancel all appointments,” said band manager Bobby James.

“Prince, that’d be kind of fun. Prince with Wendy and Lisa. Purple Rain and Kiss, wouldn’t that be good?” said Mary Jo Braun of Mandick Gum.
Constantine Roussos, .Music
“Pearl Jam, Soundgarden or Metallica. I would tune in if the bands were good,” said Constantine Roussos of .Music.

“Katy Perry, yeah definitely,” said composer Ezroy Cameron.

“Aerosmith or Led Zeppelin, that’d be kind of cool,” said Craig E. Parker of Chicago Music Library.

“Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds,” said TV composer John Fulford.
Simone Burton, CPC Music Publishing
“Bob Marley. I’m a huge reggae fan. I think it would create a challenge for them. And every household has someone that knows a Bob Marley song,” said Simone Burton of CPC Music Publishing.
