Federal Communications Commission chairman Michael Powell has called for “an immediate investigation” of an incident during the MTV-produced half-time show at last night’s (Feb. 1) Super Bowl in Houston. During the show, Justin Timberlake tore the bodice of Janet Jackson, revealing her breast. Powell says the investigation will be thorough and swift.
“I am outraged at what I saw during the halftime show of the Super Bowl,” Powell says in a statement. “Like millions of Americans, my family and I gathered around the television for a celebration. Instead, that celebration was tainted by a classless, crass and deplorable stunt. Our nation’s children, parents and citizens deserve better.”
In a statement released today, MTV says the incident was “unplanned.” However, a story last week on MTV.com promised that Jackson’s performance at the Super Bowl would include “shocking moments.” That story has since been removed from the Web site.
In its statement, MTV says, “The tearing of Janet Jackson’s costume was unrehearsed, unplanned, completely unintentional and was inconsistent with assurances we had about the content of the performance,” the network says. “MTV regrets this incident occurred and we apologize to anyone who was offended by it.”
Timberlake has issued a statement apologizing for the “wardrobe malfunction.”
