The Jersey 4 Jersey benefit show Wednesday night stripped the stars of their stage names and brought them back to their hometown roots to raise money for the New Jersey Pandemic Relief Fund.
New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley introduced “Ashley Frangipane of Edison, better known as Halsey” before her heartfelt acoustic rendition of the Manic single “Finally // beautiful stranger.” Meanwhile, SZA introduced herself as “Solána… from Maplewood, New Jersey” before her heavenly vocals took hold of “20 Something” from her 2017 album Ctrl.
Aside from the two Jersey girls, Bruce Springsteen and his wife/E Street Band member Patti Scialfa performed his fan-favorite cover of Tom Waits’ 1980 classic “Jersey Girl” to cap the evening, after kicking it off with the much-needed uplifting message in “Land of Hope and Dreams.” And for a special tribute, the surviving members of Fountains of Wayne reunited for their first live performance in seven years and dedicated their Sharon Van Etten-assisted rendition of their Jersey anthem “Hackensack” to their late co-founder Adam Schlesinger, who died April 1 due to coronavirus complications at 52 years old.
