The video for Fatboy Slim’s “Weapon of Choice,” directed by Spike Jonze and starring actor Christopher Walken, leads the nominees for the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards with nine nominations. The clip is up for video of the year, best dance video, and breakthrough video, among other awards. This year’s awards ceremony is set for Sept. 6 at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House.
Other multiple nominees include ‘N Sync’s “Pop,” Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On,” and Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink, and Lil’ Kim’s all-star cover of “Lady Marmalade,” each of which earned six nominations. The latter two will compete with “Weapon Of Choice,” U2’s “Beautiful Day,” Janet Jackson’s “All for You,” and Eminem “Stan” for the top prize of video of the year.
No host has yet been announced for the event. U2 and chart-topping newcomer Alicia Keys are the first acts confirmed to perform live.
‘N Sync and Eminem were the big winners at last year’s Video Music Awards, the former winning three awards for “Bye Bye Bye” and the latter taking home two for “The Real Slim Shady,” including video of the year. The rapper’s clip for “Stan” is up for five awards this year.
The 2000 edition of the show took a turn for the bizarre, when Rage Against The Machine bassist Tim Commerford scaled a stage rigging while Limp Bizkit was accepting the best rock video award (for “Break Stuff”), and refused to come down. He was later arrested for disturbing the peace.
