Country star Shania Twain has long been held as a favorite in the LGBTQ community. With her hit song “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” becoming a staple in gay bars across America and her unbridled messages of support to her LGBTQ fan base, the singer has been taken in as one of the LGBTQ community’s preferred country diva.
But on Sunday, The Guardian published an interview with Twain where she said that had she been able to vote (the singer is Canadian), she would have voted for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
“I would have voted for him because, even though he was offensive, he seemed honest,” she said. “Do you want straight or polite? Not that you shouldn’t be able to have both. If I were voting, I just don’t want bullshit.”
In a series of tweets on Sunday evening, Twain apologized to her fans, saying that the quote was taken out of context. “As a Canadian, I regret answering this unexpected question without giving my response more context,” she wrote. “I am passionately against discrimination of any kind and hope it’s clear from the choices I have made, and the people I stand with, that I do not hold any common moral beliefs with the current President.”
Unfortunately for Twain, that didn’t seem to impress her fans much. Twitter users criticized the singer’s comments, saying that as someone with a large LGBTQ following, she should be more aware of the various ways that the Trump administration is anti-LGBTQ.
Here are just a few tweets reacting to Twain’s revelation:

Ummm, sorry, but being an offensive loudmouth doesn’t make you honest.
It just makes you an asshole.

I saw Shania Twain trending and thought she was dead. Turns out she supports Donald Trump. Ah, so it’s her career that’s dead.

So Shania Twain was a guest judge on the gayest possible show of our generation last week and this week in an interview reveals she would’ve voted for trump. What in the actual fuck? The lgbtq community is not yours to profit from while holding intolerant values. Disgusting.
