For her forthcoming studio album, Marianne Faithfull has tapped the talents of performers who have been influenced by her iconoclastic career. Due Sept. 27 in Europe on Naïve Records and in the United States in January via Epitaph’s Anti- imprint, “Before the Poison” is as previously reported, built mostly on the contributions of Nick Cave and Polly Jean Harvey.
Also lending a hand were the members of Cave’s band, multi-instrumentalist/producer and Harvey collaborator Rob Ellis (Placebo, Swell), Blur’s Damon Albarn, Jon Brion, Portishead’s Adrian Utley and producers Hal Willner (Hole, Los Lobos, Ute Lemper) and Head.
Harvey wrote the music and lyrics for three tracks (“The Mystery of Love,” “My Friends Have,” “No Child of Mine”) and wrote music for two Faithfull lyrical compositions (the title track, “In the Factory”). She also contributes guitar, bass and synths to the recordings, which she produced.
Cave provided music for several Faithful works (“Crazy Love,” “There Is a Ghost,” “Desperanto”), which he co-produced with Willner. Albarn, meanwhile wrote “The Last Song” for the artist, and Brion contributed “City of Quartz.” The latter also boasts violinist Catherine Browning (Divine Comedy, Elbow, Beth Orton) and cellist Andy Nice (Starsailor, Ed Harcourt).
Ellis’ string arrangements, percussion and other instrumentation appear throughout the album, as does Utley’s guitar and bass work. Ellis also co-produced several of the songs with Head.
“Before the Poison” will include liner notes by English novelist Will Self. It will be Faithfull’s follow-up to 2002’s “Kissin’ Time,” which featured collaborations with Blur, Billy Corgan, Beck and Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, among others.
It is unknown if Faithfull will support the release with extensive touring. At deadline, she had only a pair of performances confirmed for this year: Dec. 12 in Brussels and Dec. 16 in London.
