Today, Facebook looks back at 2015, inviting its billion-plus users to take in 365 days worth of moments, movements and mavericks. From the blue dress (or was it gold?) to U.S. presidential campaigns to B.B. King’s passing, these are the topics and figures that got people posting.
Facebook determined the frontrunners of topics based on how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1, and Facebook’s findings only emphasize the fact that 2015 was an extraordinary year for music.
Nine out of ten of the most-talked about entertainers of 2015 are musicians, including Kanye West, Nicky Jam, Shakira and The Weeknd. Ed Sheeran tops the list for getting music fans to think out loud, and his (and everyone’s) bestie Taylor Swift follows close behind at the tail end of the 1989 World Tour (not to mention her global takeover in 2015).
With over 87.2 million Facebook page likes, 83.2 million Twitter followers, and 63.6 million Instagram followers between the two of them, Swift and Sheeran exemplify the critical role social media has come to play in terms of fan interaction in 2015. Artists also got super hype about pop culture goings on, from the upcoming Star Wars film to Fifty Shades of Grey getting slapped up on the big screen.

Facebook’s year in review video concludes with, “Let’s stand together in 2016.” The music industry’s current power players have used social media throughout the year to do so, from Beyonce’s epic marriage equality Insta-vid to the Eagles of Death Metal’s heartfelt Facebook interactions following the attacks at the Bataclan. Taking Facebook’s advice for unity as the best rhythm to follow in 2016? That’s a resolution we can all get behind.
