K-pop idols Baekhyun and Soyou have joined forces on the romantic ballad, “Rain.” Released in Korea on Valentine’s Day, the sentimental duet reflects the melancholic feelings of nostalgia that accompanies the rain after a relationship comes to an end.
Baekhyun, a member of the widely popular boy band EXO, and Soyou, a member of the similarly trend girl group SISTAR, blend their voices together on the single. Soyou’s distinct raspy tone contrasts with Baekhyun’s crisp vocals. They sing in isolation for the majority of the song, before coming together in a climax of soaring harmonies.
An accompanying music video features a high school student reminiscing on a rainy day by herself.
While both singers are popular for their roles in their respective K-pop groups, each has a lofty track record when it comes to their duet history: Soyou’s 2014 collaboration with Junggigo on “Some,” featuring rapper Lil Boi, was the year’s longest-running No. 1 song on the now-defunct K-Pop Hot 100. She has since released a variety of follow-up duets. Baekhyun, in comparison, topped charts in Korea and debuted at No. 3 on the World Digital Songs chart with last year’s “Dream,” a collaboration with miss A’s Suzy.
“Rain” was produced by Soyou’s agency Starship Entertainment as part of its ongoing collaboration project. The company’s endeavor also brought about the collaboration of hip hop artist Mad Clown and indie girl group Bolbbalgan4 earlier this month.
