Japanese group Exile won best video of the year for the second consecutive year at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan, held just outside Tokyo in the Saitama Super Arena. The Avex act’s video “Ti Amo (Chapter2)” snared the top honors as well as best group video.
Katy Perry won best pop video for “I Kissed a Girl” (Virgin) and long time Japanese stars Mr. Children picked up best album of the year for “Supermarket Fantasy” (Toy’s Factory). Nelly and Fergie nabbed best collaboration video for “Party People” (Universal).
Around 12,000 attended the May 30 ceremony, which was broadcast live on Japanese TV to 7.2 million homes. The show will reach worldwide audiences on June 19 when it airs on MTV’s “World Stage,” a weekly program that is broadcast on 62 MTV channels internationally.
Green Day kicked the proceedings off with a performance of “Know Your Enemy” (Reprise/Warner Bros), their first appearance at an awards show since the 2006 Grammys. LaFace Records artist Ciara sang a solo version of “Love, Sex Magic” (a track that previously featured Justin Timberlake).
Katy Perry, wearing a revealing outfit laced with plastic sushi, contributed a live version of “Hot ‘n Cold” and the Black Eyed Peas ended the night with “Boom Boom Pow” (Interscope).
The Beastie Boys were surprise guests as they picked up the street icon award and Teriyaki Boyz walked away with best hip-hop video for “Zock On!” (Star Trak/Universal), featuring Pharrell and Busta Rhymes.
The MTV Music Video Awards Japan are decided by votes from MTV viewers in Japan.
