During Monday’s VH1’s Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens special, host Eve had five outfit changes, but it was her first look, a sheer and sparkling jumpsuit by Michael Halpern of Halpern, that stole the show.
Originally a part of his debut collection, the current Versace Haute Couture consultant and former J.Mendel and Oscar de la Renta designer opted out of showing his one-of-a-kind gold linear sequin on black tulle jumpsuit to save it “for something special.”
“I didn’t know what that special thing was at the time, but when the opportunity to put Eve in it came along — it was the perfect time,” he says.
Halpern, 28, works with his hands by draping and cutting on the body to help pay close attention to a woman’s form, which he says informs his design process. “I love this ultra glam ’70s thing at the moment, but having it modern and not too self-important is crucial. To be honest, I did have other requests for people to wear this look to events and didn’t feel it was what I wanted. But with Eve there was no question — the second she put it on, everyone in the room knew it was hers for life.”
“I honestly think this is the best look I’ve seen her in,” said stylist LexyRose Boiardo, who has been working with the rapper for seven years. “It’s the perfect melody or composition of all these different things. Eve is very clean and sleek, but at the same time yeah it’s a little wild, it’s a little sexy — there’s always a twist.”
Generally with Eve, Boiardo will accessorize with plenty of rings and earrings, but she chose a simple and sleek mix of Bijules and Noir jewelry to complement the shimmering element of the bodysuit. To finish the look, Boiardo pulled a pair of black suede pumps with a chunky metallic gold heel from British shoe brand Darmaki.
While her signature paw print tattoos were covered up, Boiardo likes to accentuate them when she wears tank tops. The duo favors strong yet feminine looks with a focus on a defined shoulder and narrow waist.
“Eve walking out of the car onto that magenta carpet was a total head rush,” said Halpern. “LexyRose and I were standing there watching her, and I think we almost collectively fainted. It was pretty major seeing her step out for that first moment; she was pure magic.”
