This may sound blasphemous to some, but the Rev. Al Green’s new album trumps “I Can’t Stop,” his momentous 2002 reunion with mentor Willie Mitchell. That set definitely had its moments; however, “Everything’s OK” finds the pair clicking on all cylinders. Green’s achingly tender rendition of Joe Cocker’s classic “You Are So Beautiful” will make you wonder what took him so long to record it. “Nobody but You” and “Perfect to Me” further exemplify the reasons behind Green and Mitchell’s prolific aural partnership: string, horn and organ arrangements that never overshadow the true instrument—Green’s emotion-packed tenor. Not only does this album hum with the magic that endowed the pair’s past hits (“Let’s Stay Together”), it shows that talent isn’t the sole realm of the young. Amen.—GM
