Eve 6 will celebrate the 20th anniversary of its platinum self-titled debut album by playing it in its entirety this fall, during a 15-date tour that gets under way Nov. 28 in Salt Lake City.
“It’s definitely surreal,” singer-guitarist Max Collins says about the trek. “When you think about actual moments along the timeline, it feels like an eternity, but that fact that we’re still able to go out and play and people show up and want to hear these songs 20 years later is pretty cool.”
Eve 6 was released during April of 1998 and reached No. 33 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Heatseekers chart. It spawned the No. 1 Alternative Songs hit “Inside Out” along with enduring favorites “Leech” and “Tongue Tied.” “That record was us not knowing what we were doing at all,” Collins recalls. “It was before we started to become a cog in the wheel of the machine. There wasn’t any pressure on it, really, and it was this kind of exercise of us being kids, figuring out how to put songs together over the latter part of our high school career, which is when most of those songs were written.
“It kind of transcends adolescence. Would I write the lyric ‘I want to put my tender heart in a blender’ today? No, I definitely wouldn’t, but that’s also the line that people remember. So I have sort of mingled emotions about it — part pride, part embarrassment, the same way you would feel if someone was going through an old photo album.”
Playing the entire album will also give Eve 6 — which includes co-founders Collins and Jon Siebels and new drummer Ben Hilzinger, who also works with Collins in the band Fitness — a chance to return rarely played tracks such as “Saturday Night,” “Open Road Song,” “There’s a Face” and “Small Town Trap.” Collins says Eve 6 is hoping to document one or more of the shows, possibly for future release, though no anniversary edition of the studio album is planned right now.
Eve 6, meanwhile, hasn’t released a new album since 2012, and while Collins predicts the group will release more new music in the future he indicates a full album may not be on the agenda. “My creative energy now is going more into Fitness, but I do think it would be cool to do a single (with Eve 6) at some point, maybe next year,” he says. “We’ve talked about doing a deep cuts, punk covers EP or something that’s just kind of indulgent and fun for us, but maybe a few other people might find entertaining. I’m sure we’ll do something at some point.”
