Just like Tina Fey and BFF Amy Poehler, or Arya Stark and her hate for the Lannisters, music and the Emmys will always go hand in hand. So, in preparation for the 67th Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, we look back at some of the best music moments from the award show’s past. Spoiler alert: There’s a lot of Jimmy Fallon.
Taylor Swift and Jimmy Fallon Among Early Emmy Winners
1994 – Jason Alexander sings a TV theme song medley featuring a number of shows including The Addams Family, Gilligan’s Island, and many more. It was such a hit, there was a part two in 1995.
2006 – Host Conan O’Brien dedicated his musical number to host station NBC’s troubles keeping up with other networks.
2007 – The Emmys get animated with a musical number by Brian and Stewie from Family Guy singing about the “wide selection of trash” on TV these days. Naturally, there’s still some NBC teasing this year, too.
2010 – It’s not a show hosted by Jimmy Fallon if it isn’t hugely influenced by music. He opened this year’s show with a performance of Bruce Springsteen‘s “Born to Run” featuring the Glee cast, Tina Fey, Jon Hamm, Jane Lynch, Joel McHale, Betty White and more.
Then, there was the “In Memoriam” to honor shows that ended that year, for which Fallon performed as Elton John, a member of Boyz II Men and Green Day.
And throughout the show Fallon sang with stars like Kim Kardashian and Amy Poehler while introducing presenters.
2011 – The Lonely Island blessed viewers with a medley of songs featuring Michael Bolton, Maya Rudolph, Ed Helms, John Stamos, and Akon.
Emmy 2015 Nominees: Katy Perry, Darren Criss, Taraji P. Henson, Queen Latifah & More
2013 – This year, host Neil Patrick Harris gave Jimmy Fallon a run for his money with an epic opening number and a tribute to the year’s nominees for Best Choreography featuring vocals by Harris and music from theme songs of nominated shows.
Also, Carrie Underwood paid tribute to The Beatles with a performance of “Yesterday.”
2014 – Though TV theme songs seem to rarely have lyrics these days, 20 years after Jason Alexander’s medley of classic theme songs, Weird Al Yankovic brings reprised the routine sort of… Yankovic added lyrics to modern theme songs with hilarious results. Click here to watch.
