EMI Music and Warner Music have signed up to an all-you-can-eat download service run by Datz.com, which will provide access to unlimited music in MP3 format for £99.99 ($164.45) a year. The service will allow fans to keep the music when the year is up.
Beggars Group and The Orchard have also signed up to the Datz Music Lounge and more are set to join in the coming weeks.
“We wanted to find a safe and legal way for users to download music to keep,” said managing director Michael Richardson. “With literally thousands of artists and millions of tracks all in unlocked MP3 format, the Datz Music Lounge provides safe, carefree downloading for all music enthusiasts.”
The Datz Music Lounge gift box is available from leading high street retailers including Sainbury’s this week or online at www.datzmusiclounge.com. Users insert a secure USB key into their computer to access the service.
Music is downloaded in DRM-free format to a PC and can be transferred to any device, according to Oxfordshire-based Datz.com. There are around 2.5 million tracks available.
“The Datz Music Lounge offering is a new and innovative way for consumers to gift digital music via high street retailers – just in time for the peak season,” said EMI Music U.K. & Ireland SVP sales and commercial development Matthew Crosswaite. “The product is subscription based and will be a valuable and insightful tool for understanding how consumers explore and react to EMI’s deep and rich back catalog.”
