EMI Music Australia has struck a deal to distribute product from Sydney-based indie Spunk Records in Australia and New Zealand.
Spunk was formed in 1999 by owner/director Aaron Curnow as an extension of his “Spunk” fanzine. In the past 12 months, it has released albums by Antony & the Johnsons, Arcade Fire, Smog, Sufjan Stevens, Animal Collective and Jack Ladder.
John O’Donnell, managing director of EMI Music Australia, said he pursued the deal after he realized that three Spunk releases were in his personal Top 10 albums of last year.
O’Donnell has pulled the trigger on a flurry of label deals in recent weeks. As previously reported, EMI has struck a distribution and marketing deal with Melbourne-based Rubber Records, and a separate licensing deal with former INXS manager Chris Murphy’s Sydney-based world music Petrol Records.
