Missy Elliott leads the field with eight nominations for the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards, to be handed out Aug. 28 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall. Elliott’s “Work It” clip is up for video of the year, best hip-hop video and best direction in a video, among others. Justin Timberlake is close behind with seven nods, including video of the year for “Cry Me a River.”
The Mark Romanek-directed video for Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” is up for six awards, including video of the year, best male video and best direction in a video. The other video of the year nominees are 50 Cent’s “In Da Club” and Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.”
Artists with four nominees apiece are Jennifer Lopez, Radiohead, Queens Of The Stone Age, White Stripes, Christina Aguilera and Beyonce. Twelve acts gained multiple nods, including Kelly Clarkson, Evanescence, Coldplay and Sean Paul.
Coldplay’s “The Scientist” will battle Floetry’s “Floetic,” Sum 41’s “Hell Song,” Kenna’s “Freetime” and Queens Of The Stone Age’s “No One Knows” in the breakthrough video category. 50 Cent, Sean Paul, Clarkson, Evanescence, All-American Rejects and Simple Plan will square off for best new artist.
In the viewer’s choice field, voted on exclusively by fans, the nominees are Beyonce, Timberlake, Eminem and Good Charlotte.
Comedian Chris Rock will host the event, while Coldplay and Aguilera are the first two acts confirmed to perform on the ceremony, to be broadcast live by MTV.
