New York-based sonic craftsman Elliot Moss is back at it, orchestrating new eerie electropop worlds in the wake of his 2015 debut Highspeeds. Today (Feb. 10) we bring you “Closedloop,” an escape from an unhinged universe brought to you through a night in the home studio.
“This new music is supposed to sound like two worlds at odds,” the 23-year old vocalist-songwriter-producer tells Billboard. “I wanted ‘Closedloop’ to have an uncomfortable duality to it — clean but dirty… Next to a trashy drum groove is this synth (a Prophet) that sounds like raw voltage.”
If Moss’ voice sounds withdrawn, perhaps on a different astral plane, that’s intentional. Inspired by worlds whirring past windows on tour, the lyrics are all about retreat: “It would be better if the world would all slow down,” goes the refrain. Once Moss got to his home studio, the song coalesced into its current form. “I like working after the world’s gone to bed,” he says. “It’s quiet. Sometimes I’ll catch myself recording for five hours and it only feels like one.”
Take a listen to the new single below and spend four and a half minutes drifting away from whatever you’d like to drift away from. But do understand you’re bound to return. Says Moss: “It’s also about self-diagnosing that escapism — making an effort to come back from it.”
